As a part of AAPI Month, I was asked by St. Lous SC to create a limited quantity giveaway shirt design as artist of the match.
I didn’t want to do something that felt like a standard Asian trope. My struggle was that ‘Asian’ and ‘Pacific Islander’ are such broad terms that it felt like a disservice to lump them all together under a singular icon or symbol. My solution was to take something that is widely celebrated in Asian cultures regardless of where they are – the flower – and make it feel both universal and unique at the same time. By doing some research and finding the National Flower for a lot of the major Asian countries and communities around the world and putting them all into a pattern that makes up the CITY crest, I was able to celebrate the unity of the community while also equally celebrating their individuality.
